Continual arrangement of Saul bellow’s works (2)

Novel gets their specific style, no matter the Gothic, or detective, history, naturalism. Only the unique style with unique story can attract the reader. The specific style is necessary for a good novel. From the style analysis, compared with Saul bellow’s other works, this novel, Herzog, with limited pilots, is rich in its content and in the effectiveness of disposition of tone and language. In the style, it is presented in the form of letters to portray the hero’s state of mind. Furthermore, the novel involves the largest number of social problems which are not only confronted with by Herzog but also are thrown to the whole society. In 1960s when American society embraces its revolutionary ways of thinking, Herzog is not only a typical intellectual in American society but also a universal representative in modern society. So the solving methods and conditions of Herzog’s spiritual crisis will give people a clearer understanding of American society at that time and help to tackle the problems left over in modern society. With simple life story, the psychological and ideological alienation of the protagonist demonstrated in the novel is worth exploring and the didactic parts on human beings’ existing way are worthwhile studying.
