Based on the materials mentioned above, the thesis can be separated into three chapters. The first chapter has three parts. The first part is mainly about the historical background which will be provided to discuss the social elements of the Jewish people. In that point, American history will be presented in details. In the second part, it talks the Jewish vagrant and Judaism. The last part will combine Herzog and Bellow in their Jewish root which throws the novel the characteristic of autobiography as the author is a Jewish-American. Moses Herzog is just like the shadow of the author, and the phenomenon of the assimilation of Jewish traditions in American cultures in the novel is the sketch of the whole American society. In chapter two, a new theory, the three metamorphoses of spirit, put forward by the German philosopher Nietzsche in Sprach Zarathustra will be fully used to support the whole process of alienation of the human nature in the novel. This chapter has two sections. Section one will focus on a brief introduction of Nietzsche and Sprach Zarathustra. In the following section, there are three points where the three metamorphoses of spirit by Nietzsche will be explained one by one according to the three phases of deformation from camel to lion and returning to child, which matches the process of alienation in the novel. In the last chapter, the phases of the alienation in the novel are the pivotal points in the thesis. Still two sections will be demonstrated in this chapter. Firstly, the definition of alienation will be given from several angles, then in the second section three phases of the alienated world of the protagonist are explained respectively and preciously.
